Institution as Home

This project came about from my fascination with the history of a particular house, similar to the one I was brought up in, near the city centre. What appealed to me about the evolution of this house over time was its usage primarily by female religious organisations.

These paintings represent a period in the house’s life when it was home to orphaned girls. The history of the house ties in with my own family history. On the early death of her mother, a close family member was about to be sent to this orphanage (even though her father was still alive) only to be kept at home at the last minute by the arrival of an aunt from the country to care for the family.

These paintings represent my response to the family member’s feelings about the house, and having visited the house, my understanding of its mood and atmosphere
